Character
Underpinning personality, talent and behavioural style, shaping who we are as a person and defining our leadership, is our ‘character’. Character is crucial; the importance of character, often ignored, cannot be overstated. My definition:
The Character Wheel
Particularly important to those who lead others, mature character traits are equally as important to all who wish to have sustainable success, personal contentment, and peace. We should all aim for and would all benefit from possessing a greater ‘strength of character’.
Exceptional Leaders possess Strength of Character displaying both Decisiveness and Courage. They reach their goals through practicing Self-control, demonstrating Perseverance until they obtain their desired outcomes.
Exceptional leaders, although strong, operate with Kindness. When things go wrong, they are prepared to release Forgiveness, letting go and moving on to the next objective. Being people of integrity, they demand Trustworthiness of themselves, not seeking self-aggrandizement but prepared to give praise and Acknowledgement where it is due.
Exceptional leaders trust their Discernment and demonstrate Honesty with themselves as well as with others. They do not give in to their feelings and value Objectivity when dealing with other people and situations. Being excellent listeners equips them to demonstrate Wisdom in all encounters.
Finally, exceptional leaders continually display Selflessness, and although often propelled by a sense of urgency, are able to demonstrate Patience when required. They are not arrogant but display Humility. These positive character traits instill faith, confidence, optimism, and hope in themselves and others. The resultant exceptional leader displays Maturity, living a life fulfilled, contented and at Peace.
